I'm a Minnesota dad who has been flooding a backyard rink every winter since my kids were little. Some of our best family memories were made out there — skating under the lights, chasing pucks, and soaking in the kind of winter you don't avoid… you embrace.

But every year, the same question lingered: How do you keep kids warm — and feel a little better about the inevitable falls that come with ice?

When they were young, they wore helmets — and for real games, organized play, and anything high-speed or high-contact, that's still the right call. As they got older and started skating casually on the pond, there was no in-between product that felt right — nothing warm, comfortable, discreet, and built specifically for real outdoor skating.

I wasn't looking for a helmet replacement. I was looking for something smarter for the moments when a helmet isn't the answer someone's actually going to choose — a hat kids will actually wear, that does more for them than an ordinary beanie.
